Bring in the New Year with a Better Smile
Bring in the New Year with a Better Smile
When looking at the science behind the effects of smiling, researchers talk about the chemicals released when smiling. A study conducted by the Henry Ford Health System resulted in two important hormones released that help a person’s mood: Cortisol and Endorphins. When released, a decrease in blood pressure, stress and pain were detected, with some research even indicating a better immune system occurs when smiling. A person also becomes more likeable, which in-turn boosts self-confidence. Another study by Psychology Today even produced results showing how smiling can lengthen a person’s life.
BRACES OF THE PAST
So, with the science backing the simple gesture of smiling, we go back to our original question, “Why don’t more people include a better smile on their New Year’s resolutions list?” The answer to that may be what lies in the past—or rather, what some may recall braces were like decades ago.
The thought of straightening teeth dates to ancient times with archeologists documenting finding medal on teeth on some mummified remains. Centuries later, in 1819, a mouth device was invented that would attach to the teeth. Over the next 100 years or so, different materials were used to wrap around teeth, such as gold, copper, silver and even platinum. In the 1970s however, braces saw a breakthrough as glue was now used to hold brackets to the teeth. But even with these documented advancements, the image or perception of wearing braces has been slow to evolve, causing many to forgo that better smile.
NOT YOUR PARENT’S BRACES
Here at the Smile Shoppe, we pride ourselves in getting to know each of our patients. They become part of our family, with the journey beginning during the initial consultation. It is here where we learn their concerns, their wishes, and most importantly, their apprehensions, when it comes to straightening their teeth. In most cases, those being associated with the aesthetics. This is where the conversation takes a turn. Seeing the excitement on a prospective patient’s face when they learn that braces today are much different than braces of yesteryear. Clearly, orthodontics has come a long way, even in just the last 60 years.

So, with that said, now comes the best part of this blog—the options available.
- Traditional Metal Braces
Through the years, we’ve come to realize that for our middle and high-school patients, it’s all about that cool vibe! To accomplishment this, most choose traditional metal braces while adding their own personal flair in the color of elastics (rubber bands) they choose.
- Self-ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces are like traditional metal braces, without the rubber bands. These are replaced with a specialized clip that help the archwire guide teeth into place. This method requires fewer appointments so patients with busy schedules tend to prefer this option.
- Clear (Ceramic) Braces
For patients looking for a more inconspicuous option, ceramic braces offer a less visible approach. For this reason, college students and even adults tend to gravitate towards ceramic braces. They do come with more maintenance so are best chosen by patients who are prepared to pay more attention to their oral hygiene.
- Clear Aligners
Teeth aligners have become very popular over that last decade or so. For many, the flexibility that aligners offer is a game changer when committing to straightening teeth. They are an ideal option for patients who may need to remove the aligner for short periods of time during treatment, and they provide less hassle when eating, brushing, and flossing.
- Lingual Braces
Because lingual braces are installed behind the teeth, patients are given a 100% invisible option in straightening their teeth. They are completely customized and ideal for professional adults, athletes, musicians, and those who spend time in front of a camera.
