Local Orthodontists Voted ‘Best Orthodontics Practice’

in 2022 Reader's Choice Award

It’s hard to miss The Smile Shoppe’s signature logo—a tooth that encapsulates the simple word ‘Smile’. It’s the premise of the mission set out by Alessandra Chacon, DDS, MS and Ryan Reyes, DDS, MS—partners in business, as well as in life as husband and wife—that is multi-layered in creating a beautiful and healthy smile, leading down the path of success through positive self-confidence.

When entering The Smile Shoppe, it’s easy to see how the duo’s vision of excellent orthodontic services, combined with exceptional customer service, earned them the title of ‘Best Orthodontics Practice’ in this year’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

“Dr. Chacon and I are so proud to have earned the community’s vote,” said Dr. Reyes. “This award very much hits home for us because Laredo is my community—I was raised here, and all I’ve ever wanted to do since my high school graduation was come home and provide first-class orthodontic services for my hometown.”

ALESSANDRA CHACON, DDS, MS

Dr. Chacon grew up loving both art and dentistry. She found a way to combine these two passions with a career in Orthodontics.

“Attention to detail provides my patients with the beautiful smile they’ve always wanted,” she explains. “In a way, my patient’s smile becomes my canvas, and the moment they see themselves in the mirror for the first time without braces, you can see how ecstatic they are to finally have that show-stopping smile.”

Born in Venezuela, Dr. Chacon began her journey by enrolling at the Universidad Santa Maria for Dental School, where she completed a five-year program. Soon after, she was accepted into the Orthodontics Residency Program at the UTHSC at San Antonio. She credits the program in teaching and exposing her to a range of orthodontic treatment plans and techniques to address the needs of patients.

In 2016, Dr. Chacon graduated with her Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, as well as a Master of Science in Orthodontics for research in craniofacial growth and development.

Along with an excellent education, the school gave Dr. Chacon something a bit more priceless.

“The day I met my future husband in class was the best day of my life!” she says. “It still amazes me that out of four students chosen from more than 200 applicants for the residency program, Dr. Reyes and I were chosen together—talk about fate!”

Together, Dr. Chacon and Dr. Reyes have two sweet daughters – Sophia, 5, and Emily, 2, who they are raising in the community they love.

A graduate of the Laredo’s Alexander Magnet for Health Sciences, Dr. Reyes says he’s driven by both the journey and the end-result of a patient’s treatment plan: A beautiful smile.

“We all know it takes a village to succeed, but at some point, you become part of that village, and now it’s your turn to give back. Creating beautiful and healthy smiles in Laredo is my way of contributing to the community that raised me.”

RYAN REYES, DDS, MS

A graduate of UT Austin, Dr. Reyes went on to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery and a Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the UTHSC at San Antonio. Like his wife and partner, he also completed a Master of Science in Orthodontics for research in craniofacial growth and development.

When opening their doors in May of 2017, Dr. Reyes and Dr. Chacon set out to give their patients exceptional service with a variety of treatment plans to choose from. In doing so, they’ve adopted a patient-care philosophy using trusted evidence-based technology.

“New equipment, materials and ideas emerge often in this industry and can certainly be overwhelming for patients,” explains Dr. Reyes. “So, when choosing a plan for our patients, we go with the one that is backed by the strongest scientific research showing proven results that’ll meet our patient’s needs.”

Both Dr. Reyes and Dr. Chacon are Board Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics.

The Smile Shoppe welcomes parents to give them a call at (956) 568-5525 to schedule a complimentary consultation. No referral from a dentist is needed.

When looking at the science behind the effects of smiling, researchers talk about the chemicals released when smiling. A study conducted by the Henry Ford Health System resulted in two important hormones released that help a person’s mood: Cortisol and Endorphins. When released, a decrease in blood pressure, stress and pain were detected, with some research even indicating a better immune system occurs when smiling. A person also becomes more likeable, which in-turn boosts self-confidence. Another study by Psychology Today even produced results showing how smiling can lengthen a person’s life.
