Born in Venezuela, Dr. Chacon completed a five-year dental program at Universidad Santa María before being accepted into the Orthodontics Residency Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSC-SA). In 2016, she earned both her Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and a Master of Science in Orthodontics, focusing her research on craniofacial growth and development.

Her time in San Antonio brought more than academic achievement—it also brought love.

“The day I met Ryan in class was life-changing,” she says with a smile. “Out of more than 200 applicants, only four students were selected for the program, and somehow, we both made it in together. It truly felt like destiny.”

Now settled in Laredo, Dr. Chacon and Dr. Reyes are raising their two daughters—Sophia (5) and Emily (2)—in the same community where their dream practice continues to grow.

A graduate of Laredo’s Alexander Magnet for Health Sciences, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin, followed by his Doctor of Dental Surgery, Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and Master of Science in Orthodontics from UTHSC San Antonio.

Not all Halloween Candies are Frightful

When it comes to Halloween candy and orthodontic braces, most would make the immediate assumption that the two are frightful when mixed together—but that could not be farther from the truth! In fact, as Halloween is one of the most celebrated occasions of the year—it certainly is one of our favorites here at the Smile Shoppe—there are some amazingly simple tricks braces-wearing patients can follow to enjoy those treats. So, with that in mind, let’s review a few dos and don’ts when it comes to what snacks you do not have to be frightful of.

NO TRICKS FROM THESE BRACES-LOVING HALLOWEEN TREATS

For those who love chocolate, you’ll be happy to learn that as long as you stay clear of nuts, you can eat all the chocolate you’d like, including those listed below as well as the other more popular Halloween treats included:

3 Musketeers
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Reese’s Pieces
Original M&Ms or peanut butter M&Ms
KitKats
Kisses
Hershey Bars
Cheese puffs
Cheez-It mini crackers
Soft cookies

When it comes to eating these, however, we cannot stress enough the importance of brushing your teeth after consuming these candies. While they are safe in not breaking brackets, they can still cause problems with lingering sugar that can lead to plaque and acid build-up that can cause tooth decay.

EXPECT TRICKS FROM THESE HALLOWEEN TREATS

Taffy
Candies that are chewy, such as Tootsie Rolls and Sugar Babies
Caramel candies or those that include caramel, such as Sugar Daddies and Milk Duds
Candies that include nuts, such as Snickers and M&Ms with nuts, Hershey’s with nuts
Beef Jerky
All nuts
Hard candies, such as Jolly Ranchers, Sweet Tarts and Nerds

The problem with the above treats is their tendency to get stuck around braces, which can cause them to loosen or pop off brackets—which is the same with hard candies, chips and nuts. So, when in doubt, simply ask yourself, Is it chewy? Can it break a wire or bracket? If you think the answer to both is ‘yes,’ it is best to avoid the treat--ultimately avoiding the trick.

Hacks to Ensure a Positive

Back-to-School Journey with Braces

It seems as if just yesterday we were wishing our patients a happy summer! But, as with most enjoyable things, time flies when you’re having fun—meaning the time has come to head back to school for another year filled with studying, clubs, activities, friendships, and goals!

To make sure our braces-wearing patients have a fantastic school year while on their journey to a beautiful smile, we’ve put together some hacks—tips—that are sure to make this school year with braces the very best yet!

A Backpack Kit

Because most schools in Laredo have done away with school lockers, backpacks have become the child’s portable locker. It’s the place he or she keeps all the essential items needed to get them through their day. So, with this in mind, plan to add a small kit that’ll include some basic items that’ll come in handy after eating breakfast, lunch, or a snack while on campus. Some of the more important things to include are:

Toothbrush, Toothpaste and Floss: These are essential in removing any food that remains stuck on the brackets and wires after eating.

Dental Wax: Some dental wax will certainly ease any irritation to the inner lips, gums and cheeks that are being caused by the braces.

Chapstick or Lip Balm: With so many brands to choose from—tinted, flavored, unflavored—packing one or two will provide relief when lips become dry or cracked.

Straw: Using a straw when drinking beverages will help avoid staining on the teeth that could occur with dark-colored drinks, such as colas or tea (which should be avoided anyways due to high sugar content!)

Small Mirror: Keeping a small mirror in the kit allows students to check their teeth after eating or snacking. Ideally, brushing and flossing after each meal is best, but sometimes finding a nearby sink is difficult. In this case, having a mirror handy helps in removing any food particles stuck in brackets and wires, which promotes healthy gums by decreasing bacteria and plaque that begins to form on teeth when food remains for long periods of time.

Why Water is So Important

With Laredo’s heat, drinking plenty of water throughout the day is a sure way of staying hydrated and healthy. But did you know water plays another essential role for braces wearing patients? It helps in removing small particles of food that may be stuck in between wires and brackets. It’s an easy way to resolve this issue without needing to find a nearby sick to brush and floss. Furthermore, when given the option of drinking water over sugary drinks, we always encourage water—or at least clear drinks—to avoid cavities, white spots around the brackets, and the potential of staining. As mentioned above, sugary drinks tend to find their way in between brackets that when removed, may leave permanent stains or white spots on teeth. If dark-colored drinks are the only beverage available—don’t worry! Just remind your child that the straw inside their handy kit will take care of that issue.

Choose Braces-Friendly Foods

In most cases, favorite foods of braces-wearing patients fall on the list of foods to avoid. Reason being, they’re either crunchy, chewy, or very sticky, and therefore have the potential to damage the wires and brackets of braces. The good news is that its only temporary. As soon as braces come off, patients can binge and enjoy any foods they wish. But while the braces are on, it’s very important to opt for foods and snacks that are braces-friendly.

So, what are braces-friendly foods? It’s simple: anything that is soft and easy to chew, including well cooked vegetables, soft fruits, pasta, baked fish, chicken and lean cuts of meat. For desserts and snacks, ice cream, yogurt, and Jell-O are all good options, along with a slice of cake or pie.

Foods to avoid include most fried items, crunchy vegetables such as carrots, and chips. For entrees requiring a person to bite into, such as pizza, hamburgers, and sandwiches, it’s best to pre-cut them into small bite-sized pieces. Not only will this save the brackets and wires from damage or breaking, but also eliminate food from remaining upfront.

Some good news is that often school districts post their daily breakfast and lunch menus online, as is the case here in Laredo. Parents of students attending public schools can use this information to their advantage by checking their school district’s website to see what’s being served that day. If the menu includes foods that are not braces-friendly, then packing a lunchbox with appropriate foods will be best that day.

The Benefits of Using a Mouthguard

While it may be difficult to convince a braces-wearing child to wear a mouth-guard, they truly are a lifesaver for student athletes—even kids participating in daily gym activities. Mouth-guards by design are meant to be worn over braces. When constructed of quality materials, they not only decrease the chance of damage to the wires and brackets, but also minimize any injuries that could come from hits to the mouth, gums, or cheeks. By wearing a mouth-guard, students are not only protecting these sensitive areas, but also eliminating a trip back to the Smile Shoppe for repairs or replacements of damaged wires or brackets.

The very latest in traditional braces is all the rave! Unlike those worn in the past that included colored ligature rings holding the wire in place, Self-Litigating braces (or brackets) allow the wire to be engaged in the bracket through a gate incorporated in the bracket itself. Colors are now just decorative! This allows for more efficient and controlled tooth movements. More importantly, because the brackets and wires begin working from the day the patient leaves until the day they return, visits can be scheduled farther in-between, eliminating days of pain and discomfort immediately following an adjustment appointment.

Other benefits of Self-Litigating braces include shorter orthodontist appointments, easier cleaning, and less pain and discomfort.

Digital Cephalometric Tracing

Finally, to ensure our patients receive the most accurate treatment plans, we’ve incorporated the use of Digital Cephalomentric Tracing that allows precision accuracy of cephalometric measurements—in simple terms, the analysis of the dental and skeletal relationship of the patient’s head. Together, Dr. Chacon and Dr. Reyes have two sweet daughters – Sophia, 5, and Emily, 2, who they are raising in the community they love.

A graduate of the Laredo’s Alexander Magnet for Health Sciences, Dr. Reyes says he’s driven by both the journey and the end-result of a patient’s treatment plan: A beautiful smile.

A graduate of UT Austin, Dr. Reyes went on to earn a Doctor of Dental Surgery and a Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the UTHSC at San Antonio. Like his wife and partner, he also completed a Master of Science in Orthodontics for research in craniofacial growth and development.

When opening their doors in May of 2017, Dr. Reyes and Dr. Chacon set out to give their patients exceptional service with a variety of treatment plans to choose from. In doing so, they’ve adopted a patient-care philosophy using trusted evidence-based technology.

The countdown is on for the remaining days of school, and while top of mind for you and your children is probably beaches and bathing suits—what you should be thinking of is biting the bullet and looking into starting the kids on braces. FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING

Now with school, sports, afterschool activities and homework out of the way, finding an open slot available for an appointment will be much easier. We understand how difficult it is during the school year to find a time that both you and your child are available. That becomes easier though in the summer when there are less commitments for your child. This is especially important at the start of orthodontic treatments when appointments tend to be a bit lengthier when evaluations, assessments and/or extractions may be necessary.

ADJUSTING TO A NEW YOU

All patient’s teeth are different. For some patients, only slight adjustments may be needed in aligning teeth. Others, however, may require more extensive orthodontic treatment. When it comes to your child’s wellness exams, don’t forget to check their pearly whites

If you’re patting yourself on the back as a parent because you’ve remained vigilant on each of the above exams—good for you! Being a great parent is one of the most difficult jobs out there, and it’s easy to overlook things amidst the demands of school, homework, and extracurricular activities, as well as your own personal responsibilities. Because of this, there’s one exam you may be missing—and it’s a big one—your child’s teeth!

Surprised to hear that? Most people are. But learning about your child’s teeth and jaws and whether they’re developing properly can save them from severe issues down the road that can be quite costly to fix if not treated at the appropriate time!

B ENEFITS OF EARLY RECOGNITION

When it comes to recognizing problems early, timing is everything—especially if problems will need future treatments. Early orthodontic exams, as the face and jaws are developing, allow orthodontists to advise you on whether treatment is recommended, what form it’ll take, and an estimate of its length.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommend children get their first check-up with an orthodontist at the first sign of a problem—but no later than age 8. An orthodontic check-up at this time is important as children still have a mixture of both baby and permanent teeth. The specific teeth that are present in your child’s mouth and the shape of their jaws and face will give an orthodontist a very good idea of any problems your child’s teeth and jaws may currently be experiencing, or if one is developing. Based on this assessment, the orthodontist may even want to get started with treatment(s) early with appliances like a jaw expander or headgear in order to prevent these problems from getting worse as your child grows. If only minor problems are present, however, the orthodontist may prefer to wait until the child loses all of his or her baby teeth, which typically occurs around your child’s adolescent growth spurt – around age 11-12 for girls and 12-13 for boys, although every child is different!

TYPES OF TREATMENT

Most parents want to know whether their child will need braces, but the most common goal of early treatment is to create proper space for permanent teeth to erupt on time and in the proper position. To do this, the orthodontist may use special appliances like a jaw expander, initiate limited orthodontic treatment (partial braces), or even strategically remove some baby teeth to make space for the permanent teeth. Once adequate space is achieved, the orthodontist will wait for the permanent teeth to come in and then determine if a second round of treatment (aka “Phase II) with full braces is needed based on any other tooth or jaw corrections that are necessary.

BENEFITS OF CORRECTLY ALIGNED TEETH

Most parents hope to raise confident, independent children. So why not get a leg up on this by ensuring your child’s teeth are coming along perfectly? It’s no surprise that perfectly aligned teeth make for a more pleasant smile and overall confidant individual. Aligned teeth also facilitate ease of dental hygiene habits, meaning healthier gums and teeth. Teeth that work together make it possible to bite and chew properly and contribute to clear and better articulated speech.

International Women’s Day and Month: Inspiring Young Women to Dream Big

Shining a spotlight on Dr. Alessandra Chacon, Orthodontist

When first meeting Dr. Alessandra Chacon, you are immediately taken in by her kindness and seemingly genuine compassion and understanding of your personal story—i.e., the ‘why’ behind your scheduled initial consultation with her. In my case, I work in a highly-visible industry where a set of perfectly straight teeth is ideal. Unfortunately, this was not what I walked in with, and quite honestly, was embarrassed to explain to her how important this was to me for fear of sounding egotistical and downright narcissistic.

THE CONSULTATION

As I waited in the consultation office, I recall attempting to come up with excuses as to why I needed—or wanted—a beautiful set of teeth. Could I say, “It was a health issue?” Or perhaps, “My job depended on it”? Before I could settle on the perfect excuse, in walked a very petite and beautiful young woman, who within seconds, made me feel at ease with her uber friendly personality. Then, as she sat down behind the desk across from me, I realized she was the orthodontist, Dr. Alessandra Chacon. From that moment on, I knew I had come to the right place. I instantly connected with her and without fear of embarrassment, opted for custom aligners for their convenience and flexibility.

In the time that’s passed since becoming a patient of the Smile Shoppe, I have had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Chacon and her staff every six weeks for follow-up appointments. Each time I visit, I enjoy learning a little more about Dr. Chacon during our conversations. I’ve learned she came to Laredo with her husband and Smile Shoppe orthodontist partner, Dr. Ryan Reyes, who was born and raised in Laredo, after meeting and dating him during their time together at the Orthodontic Residency Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She mentioned how from day one, they were inseparable best friends, and shared the story about how they would spend hours talking and laughing. Instantly falling in love with his kindness, intelligence, and good looks, it was a friendship that blossomed into an engagement a year later, which led to their decision to marry and open a practice together in his underserved medical community of Laredo.

AN UNEXPECTED BACKGROUND

As a nosy journalist, I tend to ask questions when interested in learning more about something or someone. Hence, my fascination with Dr. Chacon grew as I got to know her a little better. Turns out, the ever-so polite and engaging orthodontist comes from a family filled with role models. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to Maria and Juan Chacon. She describes her mother as the perfect homemaker—one who kept their home looking immaculate, with all meals prepared and served with an abundance of detail. She says her mother’s strong will, determination, and knack for planning were most impressive, as was her ability to problem solve any situation.

As for her father, Dr. Chacon describes him as incredibly smart, working in upper management of the national oil industry known back then as PDVSA (Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A). With an above-standard work-ethic and inner drive to continue learning, he accepted a scholarship to study at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor to complete a Master’s in Business Administration. Upon completion of his studies, he took a job in Holland, moving to the Netherlands with his wife and two young daughters. It was there that Dr. Chacon learned to speak perfect English and became innately aware of the personal lives and struggles of people she would meet during her travels across Italy and Spain.

THE LIFE-CHANGING MEETING

She eventually moved back to Venezuela to finish high school, where at the age of twelve, had a consultation with an orthodontist, Dr. Gisela Contasti. This initial appointment, she says, changed her life’s path forever. In fact, she describes that day as the day she decided to become an orthodontist herself. It would be a challenging path to undertake, but she was determined to fulfill her dream. After that day, never missing a single appointment, she learned everything she could about the practice—and not just the medical science behind the straightening of teeth but also the personal relationships that are built between orthodontist and patient. She says thoughts of one day having her own dental office with patients would drive her confidence and determination to seeing her dream come true. She especially loved how well-respected and knowledgeable her orthodontist was, and the more time spent with her, the more of a role model she became to her as she neared her own orthodontic career path. To this day, when faced with doubt on a course of action, Dr. Chacon says she asks herself, “What would Gisela do?”

A DREAM REALIZED

Head strong and determined, Dr. Chacon enrolled at the Washington Academy in Caracas, Venezuela, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She was then accepted to the Universidad Santa Maria in Caracas, Venezuela, graduating with her Doctorate in Dental Surgery. Soon after, Dr. Chacon concurrently enrolled at the Universidad de Carabobo in Valencia, Venezuela, completing a Diploma Awarding Certificate Program of Dentofacial Orthopedics and Orthodontics, while also completing a Preceptorship program in the Orthodontics Department at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. It was here that she also earned a Master of Science in Orthodontics and then completed her specialty training in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Soon after, she became a Board-Certified orthodontist.

As if this weren’t impressive enough, the amount of research Dr. Chacon has published and presented, along with numerous awards, teaching and work experiences, coupled with community service and volunteer work, leaves a person wondering how Laredo got so lucky to have someone as brilliant as she choose to practice here. Of course, the answer to that is her husband, Dr. Reyes, who not only saw a smart and incredibly skilled orthodontic partner, but also the makings of an amazing mother. Of course, that proved to be on point as today, Dr. Chacon and Dr. Reyes are the parents of two lovely daughters.

EMBODING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

In hearing that the month of March celebrates International Women’s Day and Month, I can’t think of another individual who embodies what it means to ‘celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality’ as defined in their website. https://www.internationalwomensday.com/ .

Working to achieve her dream of becoming an orthodontist – a career that traditionally is filled by men and setting aside any stereotype of expectations of Venezuelan women – Dr. Chacon serves as an example and role model to all young girls, inspiring them to fight for the dreams that make them happy. As for challenges they may face along the way, learning from her examples of finding a path around obstacles to continue moving ahead, is the clear take-away that comes after a conversation with her.

The International Women’s Day organization lists several missions they work towards in forging a gender equal world, with one in particular: “To shine a spotlight on activity uplifting and inspiring women to pursue goals without bias or barrier.” Clearly, this embraces all that Dr. Chacon stands for and lives by.

When I ask Dr. Chacon what inspires her, I am captivated by her simple answer of ‘a smile,’ saying in part, “It can open doors to new opportunities, provide happiness and comfort, and give us the confidence to achieve greater things.” Wonderful things, she says, that she’ll teach her daughters and all young girls that only come when you don’t give up on your dreams, learn from your mistakes, and overcome any obstacle that seems impossible to overcome.

“Dreams are made by us and the effort we place into making them true,” she continues. “So never give up and never settle for less.”

With the 94 ^th Academy Awards just around the corner, the time for glitz and glamor is quickly approaching. For many, tuning into the show to catch the latest movie buzz is a tradition. For us, it’s a nice escape as we get a sneak peek at everything glam—from outfit styles, to what’s trending in updo’s, jewelry and shoes—each of Hollywood’s finest and most beautiful stepping out looking impeccable and flawless. And while each stand out from the others in meticulously chosen looks, all have one thing in common—an underlying denominator that radiates Hollywood royalty. Can you guess what it is? If you guessed, ‘an amazing smile’—you are right. If you said, ‘oozing with confidence’—right again! If you missed, ‘great teeth’ however, you missed a big one.

RED CARPET CONFIDENCE

That beautiful smile – with picture perfect teeth—seems to be a must in Hollywood. When looking at the science behind the effects of smiling, researchers talk about the chemicals released when smiling. A study conducted by the Henry Ford Health System resulted in two important hormones released that help a person’s mood: Cortisol and Endorphins. When released, a decrease in blood pressure, stress and pain were detected, with some research even indicating a better immune system occurs when smiling. A person also becomes more likeable, which in-turn boosts self-confidence. Another study by Psychology Today even produced results showing how smiling can lengthen a person’s life.

BRACES OF THE PAST

So, with the science backing the simple gesture of smiling, we go back to our original question, “Why don’t more people include a better smile on their New Year’s resolutions list?” The answer to that may be what lies in the past—or rather, what some may recall braces were like decades ago.

The thought of straightening teeth dates to ancient times with archeologists documenting finding medal on teeth on some mummified remains. Centuries later, in 1819, a mouth device was invented that would attach to the teeth. Over the next 100 years or so, different materials were used to wrap around teeth, such as gold, copper, silver and even platinum.
